Shyrdak is a traditional Kyrgyz felt carpet. It is characterized by a special manufacturing tehnique and design.

The Kazakhs have the same carpet called "Syrmak".

Main features of the shyrdak:

Materials : Shyrdaks are traditionally made of 100% wool, which is highly durable and long lasting.

Manufacturing techniqe : Shyrdaks are made only by hand. One of the popular methods is felting, where the fibers are rolled into a dense cloth.

Eco-friendliness: Since Shyrdak is made of 100% wool, it is not only environmentally friendly, but also very healthy. Especially for blood circulation.

Design: Shyrdaks have bright and rich colors, and their patterns can be either geometric or stylized plant or zoomorphic motifs. These patterns often carry symbolic meaning and may reflect traditional motifs and the history of the people.

Functionality: Shyrdaks were traditionally used as floor rugs, as well as wall coverings and seating mats. They serve not only for practical purposes, but also as decorative elements that create coziness and warmth.

Aesthetics and Culture: These rugs represent an important element of the culture and traditions of the peoples of Central Asia, and their craftsmanship has been passed down from generation to generation.

Who are we?

We are a group of women in the highland region of Kyrgyzstan who want to preserve and develop Kyrgyz cultural heritage.

Shyrdak has been on the UNESCO list of cultural heritage since 2012, which is subject to urgent preservation.

The culture of making Shyrdak is almost lost, but we want to recreate it and show the world its beauty.
